McDonald-Nandi Team received the Alpha-1 Foundation Grant

The McDonald and Nandi team have been awarded a grant from the Alpha-1 Foundation for their project titled “Production and Characterization of a Biobetter Recombinant AAT-Fc Therapeutic Protein.” This grant will support the development of a recombinant alpha-1 anti-trypsin crystallizable fragment (AAT-Fc) fusion protein, which is expected to have a longer half-life, reducing the frequency of drug administration for patients suffering from AAT defiency. Doctoral candidate Anindya Karmaker will lead the research efforts. This work will pave the way for producing rare-disease therapeutics by utilizing cost-effective, plant-based production platforms, facilitating rapid and efficient development process.
